Starving, without access to sanitation and with just enough to eat and drink for two days, around 200 desperate refugees cram into one of the temporary camps in what is left of the town of Kattankundy. Among the desolation of the wrecked town stand a dozen or so blue tents, each home to around 20 people, more than half of them under the age of five.
They have been here for three days, under the care of the Islamic Federation of Mosques for this Muslim area just south of the town of Batticaloa on the east coast of the island that took the full force of the December 26 tsunami. Six thousands refugees are living in similar conditions in seven camps scattered around Kattankundy. There are no clinics, no latrines and no government assistance.
