The Asian American Federation of New York, a non-profit leadership organization that works to address the critical needs of the Asian American population in the New York City area, is seeking individuals to be part of a specialized community outreach team to assess the impact of the of local communities affected by the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami of December 2004. The team will conduct targeted outreach to local Asian immigrant communities with ties to the affected countries. Each team member will be trained in outreach, interview, documentation, and referral skills.

Responsibilities:

Team members will coordinate and identify respective community needs through outreach, dissemination of information, needs assessment, and documentation
Identify community members who have been directly or indirectly impacted by the tragedy
Research and disseminate information on relief and service resources in local communities
Conduct basic needs assessment interviews with affected individuals, other community members, and civic/local leaders
Connect affected community members to services that are available through member agencies and the broader social service network
Assess and document the extent to which community needs have been met by existing agencies and identify any access or service gaps
Recommend strategies to close service gaps and assist affected community members to access needed services


Job Requirements:

Intimate knowledge of the one or more of the affected local communities, including important community spaces, events, and leaders
Proficiency in English and one or more of the following languages: Bahasa Indonesia, Sinhala, Tamil, or Thai
Community outreach or service experience a plus
Ability to work well independently and with a team
Strong written and oral communications skills
Willingness to work flexible hours and travel within NYC
Basic word processing and internet research skills
